UACfutures
Building Futures, Sharing Good Practices: Migrant Children’s Transition to Adulthood
January 2022 – June 2023

Jointly implemented by the Council of Europe, the Special Secretariat for the Protection of Unaccompanied Minors of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum of Greece, SolidarityNow, Fundación Cepaim, and Stichting Nidos.

Background of the project
The project strengthens the fruitful exchange of good practices with a view to fostering long-term improvements in the quality of support for migrant children during their transition to adulthood at the European level, with a particular focus on Greece, Spain and the Netherlands. The project was coordinated by the Council of Europe which has developed a rich body of human rights standards, guidance and tools on the transition of unaccompanied migrant children (UAC) to adulthood over the years.

The activities of the project addressed four key areas where UAC transitioning to adulthood are known to require particular assistance:

  1. Psychological impact and support
  2. Legal support and access to basic rights
  3. Access to education and the labour market
  4. Access to accommodation.

Deliverables
The partners have brought together multiple stakeholders working in the field to exchange good practices and deliver trainings. Public authorities, institutions, NGOs, international institutions and other actors have shared experiences from around Europe to enhance know-how on specific challenges and possible solutions.

A Compendium of good practices has developed over the course of the project and enabled the wide sharing of key promising strategies and practices from EU Member States (MS), including insights and perspectives of young refugees and migrants who have themselves successfully made the transition into adulthood. Moreover, the development of specific training materials, such as a HELP e-learning course on migrant children’s transition to adulthood, will promote capacity building, including in EU MS not represented in this project. Overall, a sustained dialogue across Europe has contributed to a better understanding of good practices in supporting UAC transition to adulthood. This has been stimulated under the leadership of the Council of Europe and further supported by the partners in Greece, Spain and the Netherlands, with the direct involvement of other EU MS.

You can find all the public deliverables of the project here under Project Materials.
