Greece Guardianship Project

Nidos has been supporting the Greek authorities for the past three years to set up a guardianship system for unaccompanied minor refugees. The cooperation takes place within the framework of a bilateral agreement between Greece and the Netherlands. The support of Nidos has led, among other things, to the adoption of a law last summer that regulates the custody and reception of unaccompanied minors in Greece. There have been several mutual visits in the context of exchanging expertise. In November 2022, a delegation from the Greek Special Secretariat for Unaccompanied Minors visited Nidos, including Ter Apel. In the same month, the Royal Couple visited Athens and the Nidos liaison officer explained our work extensively to the King. Nidos has been asked to continue to provide support for the next two years from July 2023 in the further design and operationalization of the guardianship system in Greece. In this way, we make an active contribution to improving the situation of unaccompanied young refugees, including at Europe’s external borders.
